St. Mary Cemetery, the second Roman Catholic cemetery in Newport, was established by the beginning of the Civil War. The cemetery, now closed for burial, is an incomparable resource for the genealogy of Newport’s Irish American community. Next-of-kin frequently chose inscriptions referring to the county and parish of the decedent’s birth in Ireland. St. Mary Cemetery is filled to capacity, but remains open for visitation from loving family members and friends.
